A LIFETIME OF SMILES
Permanent and Removable Retainers
After orthodontic treatment is complete, retainers are used to hold your teeth in place and prevent your teeth from shifting. Wearing your retainers as directed will help ensure a long-lasting result. The three types of retainers most commonly used in our office are:
Patients who wear retainers keep results that last a lifetime.
Hawley Retainers
Hawley retainers are made of acrylic and contain an anterior wire to maintain the alignment of your front teeth, with clasps in the posterior for increased retention. Hawleys are removable, and one of the most common types of retainers used.
Clear Retainers
Clear retainers are another removable option that are made of plastic and fit directly over your teeth. These are often a popular choice, as they are a more esthetic retainer option.
Fixed Retainers
Fixed retainers are glued to the back of front teeth, and therefore cannot be removed. Fixed retainers only hold the front teeth in place and not the back, so a removable retainer is often given in conjunction with a fixed retainer to maintain the position of all teeth.
